Legal Services & Rights
Empowering girls and young women with disabilities to know, claim, and defend their rights under Kenyan and international law.
The First Step to Freedom
Girls and young women with disabilities are among the most legally vulnerable people in society — facing discrimination, exploitation, and rights violations with limited access to legal redress. Many do not know their rights, cannot access legal services, and face barriers at every stage of the justice system.
Our Legal Services & Rights program provides rights education, legal aid linkages, and advocacy to ensure that girls and young women with disabilities can understand, claim, and enforce their rights under Kenyan law and international frameworks.
We work with legal aid organisations, gender-based violence response systems, and disability rights bodies to create accessible, holistic legal support for our participants.
Legal Components
Know Your Rights
Community legal education sessions covering constitutional rights, the Persons with Disabilities Act, gender equality laws, and GBV legislation.
Legal Aid Linkages
We connect participants with pro bono lawyers, legal aid clinics, and justice agencies who can assist with cases of discrimination and rights violations.
GBV Legal Support
Guidance and referral support for survivors of gender-based violence, including assistance navigating police reporting and court processes.
Documentation Support
Assistance with obtaining identity documents, birth certificates, and disability documentation — essential for accessing services.
Law Reform Advocacy
We engage with Parliament and county assemblies to advocate for laws and policies that better protect the rights of women with disabilities.
Paralegal Training
We train community paralegals — including women with disabilities — to provide first-line legal information and support in their own communities.
Rights We Champion
Kenya Constitution 2010

Persons with Disabilities Act
Provides for the rights, rehabilitation, and welfare of persons with disabilities in Kenya.

Sexual Offences Act
Provides legal protection and recourse for survivors of sexual violence, including girls and women with disabilities.
Rights in Action
“I didn’t know I could report what happened to me. FGWN connected me with a legal aid lawyer. The case was heard and the perpetrator was convicted. I finally felt like the law was on my side.”
